The inquisitive old gentleman watched the man opposite in the Onehuuga train fill his pipe and light up. “Would you think me inquisitive,” ventured the old gentleman, “if I asked how many pipes of tobacco you smoke daily?” The man laughed. “Six or seven, perhaps,” he answered. “Say ten ounces a week?” was the next question. A careless nod was the reply. “Sir,” said the old gentleman, “you may not know it, but you are digging your grave with your pipe. You smoke too much, and tobacco is full of poison—nicotine.” “Not all brands of tobacco, surely!” was the laughing reply, “why I know at least four brands that contain hardly any nicotine, and smoke one of them myself.” The old gentleman (who said he was a moderate smoker), begged to be told the names of the tour brands, and carefully 1 jotted them down in his note-book: “Eiverhead Gold, Navy Cut No. 3, Cavendish and Cut Plug No. 10.” “There’s next to no nicotine in those,” lie was told, “because they are toasted, and the toasting eliminates the poison.”
