SINGLE MEN'S CAMPS
iWORK IN EGMONT COUNTY. MEN FROM WELLINGTON. Counties throughout Taranaki are at present engaged in locating and organising camps for unemployed single men, and the Egmont County Council's camps were a subject for discussion at the monthly meeting held in Opunake on Tuesday last. The camps on the Arawhata and Wiremu Roads are probably as well set-up as any in Taranaki there being every possible comfort and facility. A report showed that the work was progressing satisfactorily. The engineer (Mr. J. G. McIvor) said that the Public Works Department had procured twenty single men from all over Taranaki and intended bringing other men from Wellington until the total would probably reach the 100 mark. A detailed analysis of the proposed works to be carried out by the men showed that the Ihaia Road would be the first to be completed, as the surrounding farms more than warranted a suitable outlet for their produce. A fair, amount of metalling had been done on the Arawhata and Ihaia Roads in order to ensure a good route to the camps. Wit! the completion of the Kaweora camp, the engineer stated that the proposed work would be sufficient for about two years. Councillor J. S. Tosland said that the Arawhata Road camp, which he had recently visited was probably the best he had seen. The tents were neat, serviceable and clean and with the fine cookhouse would furnish a home that no young man should feel ashamed to occupy. Here was an opportunity of a good living through honest toil. Other councillors spoke in similar terms.
