BIRTHDAY PARTY

GIRL GUIDES CELEBRATE. LARGE CROWD PRESENT. The fifth anniversary of the formation of the Girl Guides in Opunake, was celebrated on Friday evening last, when the executive entertained Guides and their friends to a birthday party. Mrs. Morrison, Provincial Commissioner, honoured the party with her presence, and other visitors included the Divisional Commissioner of New Plymouth (Mrs. Broad) and Guiders from Kaponga. Mrs. T. N. Watt, District Commissioner for Manaia, Kaponga and Opunake was present, also Mrs. C. A. Smith, past president of the association. After all present had partaken of a delicious birthday tea, Mrs. F. Hammond welcomed the visitors, especially Mrs. Morrison, to the party. All felt very honoured that she had come and she hoped all the visitors would enjoy it as much as the Guides enjoyed having them. - Mrs. Morrison, in reply, thanked Mrs. Hammond for her Wellcome, and said , how yery pleased she was to be present. She reminded the Guides that she looked on all of them as her one big family, and impressed on Them, as Guides, the value of courtesy. She then asked them to give three hearty cheers for Mrs. Hammond and Mrs. Lambie for the beautiful birthday cake, which _ they had made and iced respectively. The youngest Guide, Alma Mitchell, was then called on to cut the cake.

Miss Cook, captain of the Opunake Guides, called for three cheers for the committee who had provided the party. Birthday greetings were read from Stratford and Kaponga companies. An apology was received from Mrs. Houston, Hawera, Divisional Commissioner.

The ceremony of enrolment next took place when E. Kirk, and R. Rikihana were enrolled by Mrs. Morrison as Guides. Mrs. T. N. Watt then read the names of all the Guides who had obtained badges during the year. Mrs. Morrison congratulated the girls on their fine work. Those obtaining first-class badges were: Guides Dorothy Oliver, Jean Hughson, Lily Fawcett. Second-class badges: Guides Peggy Smith, Ida Richards, Cathie McKenzie, Joyce Fitzsimmons, Nancy Watt. Thrift badges: Guides Cathie McKenzie and Jean Davidson. Cooking badges: Guides Jean Hughson, Lily Fawcett, Ida Richards, Dorothy Oliver, Peggy Smith, Nancy Watt, Winnie Coltart and Joyce Fitzsimmons.

' Songs round the camp fire were next indulged in. Later a very entertaining concert was given entirely ,by .Guides and Scouts, giving those parents present some idea of what the Guides learn during the year. The first item demonstrated all that Guiding stands for, such as courtesy, obedience, friend to animals, help and respect to the aged, and the Guide promise, which is. that they should be pure in thought word and deed. Four Boy Scouts then gave a baka which was very popular. Two country dances were next given by the Guides. A humourous sketch by the Boy Scouts was enjoyed as was the recitation “Be Prepared” hy Guide J. Hughson. A spirited Highland Fling was given by Guide Peggy Smith, with Guide Ida Richards at the piano. A song, which was sung very sweetly was rendered by Guide Joyce Fitzsimmons. An interesting item was the display of knots by the different Guides. A violin duet by Guide Dorothy Oliver and Scout Bob Campbell with Guide Jean Hughson at the piano was much enjoyed. An amusing sketch by Guides W. Coltart, Y. Gordon, C. McKenzie, P. Smith and I. Richards was very popular and bad to be re-act-ed. A piano solo by Guide Ida Richards completed the programme. Mrs. T. N. Watt thanked the parents for their presence and said that the Guides bad endeavoured to show them what they bad learnt during the year. She appealed to the mothers to encourage the children to take an interest in Guiding. ■ ‘The National Anthem was then sung after which the Guides saner “Taps.” Great credit is due to Miss Cook, captain, under whose direction the Guides have worked during the year. The committee responsible for the party were Mesdames F. Hammond (president), T. N. Watt, R. Jenkin, Hewson, Richards, XJrbahn, McCullum, Laing, Marcroft, Ross and Miss W. Mourie (secretary).'
