LAWN TENNIS.
BEGINNING OF SECOND ROUND. OPUNAKE DEFEAT PUNGAREHU. Playing at Opunake on Wednesday in continuation of the matches for the Western Division Shield, the local team were victorious by 14 sets to Pungarehu 2 sets. The match was first of a series in the second round of the competition. The weather was all that could be desired and the contestants had many good games, some of the players showing signs of good improvement since the commencement of the competition. Smith 2 lost to Mrs. Thomas 7; Miss L. Gilhoojy 1 lost to Miss Perry 7. Men’s Doubles. Fleming and Priest 4 lost to Thomas and Barraclough 9 j Roots and Brophy 6 lost to Smith and Lawrence 9. Ladies 1 Doubles, Misses Brophy and Fleming 4 lost to Misses Chambers and Trotter 7; Misses Smith and Gilhooly 7 won from Mrs. Stephenson and Mrs. Thomas 6, Mixed Doubles, Fleming and Miss Brophy 5 lost to Thomas and Miss Trotter 7; Priest and D.
