TWELVE DISTRICTS STILL “DRY.”

ASHBURTON HAS LOST CHANCE OF VOTING FOR RESTORATION. Although the districts of Ohinemun, which earned restoration in rd-Ot and Ashburton, which luis been, under 10 license since 1952, have been ,\ipcd <ut as a consequence of the alterations to the electoral boundaries, there will still be twelve districts which will have local restoration polls at the nest general licensing poll to be held this tear. 1 hese districts are ; Auckland Suburbs, Eden, Orey Lynn, Roskill, Masterton. Wellington East, Wellington South, Wellington Suburbs, Oamavu, Clutha, Mat aura, Invercargill. Auckland Suburbs is an eiulic.y new electoral district formed from the old no-license districts of Eden, Grey Lynn and Roskill. and Wellington East will have a local restoration poll for the first time, owing to the larger portion of the district having previously been contained within the no-license areas of Wellington Suburbs and W cllington South. From the time that the local option polls were instituted in HOT there have been twelve districts that hate carried no-license. These were Clutha, which went dry in 1300. Ashburton and Mateura which carried no-license in 1002, Invercargill, Oautaru, and Grey Lynn, which followed u:t m 19()o, and Eden. Masterton. Wellington Suburbs, Wellington South, Olnnemuri and Bruce, which wore the list districts to no dry having carr.ed noliccnse in 1508. Alterations in the boundaries have resulted in the elimination of the d s- ' tricts of Bruce, Ashburton and Ohinemuri, while Roskill, Auckland Subu -bs. and Wellington East have been created no-license districts. The district of Bruce has teen largely incorporated in the no-license district of Clutha. but Ash’m-ton has been divided between the “wet” districts of Ellesmere (now M'd-C’nnterhury) and Temuka. Consequently the electors of the former dry area of Ashburton now lmv« "/» of voting r restoration of licenses.
