The funeral of the ta f e Private John Murray Stitt 23893 N.Z.E.F., of 47 Ross Street, Kilbirnif, took place, at Wellington, on Wednes day. The service was'conducted by the Rev E J. Orange late chaplain of the N.Z.E.F. The Wellington College Cadets, under Lieutenant Thompson, provided the firing party. Amongst those present were the Mayor (Mr C. J- ; B. Norwood), Mr E. P. Norman (town clerk), Sir John Luke, Lieutenant H. Mulholland (representing the G.O.C), Major Watson (R.S.A.), Mrs Neilson (Women's National Reserve), and Mr H. G. Lockett (War Pensions Department!. Mrs Stitt and family will have the sympathy of Opunake friends in their bereavement'

,Mrs Baskiville, of Hastings, is visiting Opunake Her husband, the late Se rgeant Baskiville was herein the early nays as a member of the A.C. Force. Mrs Baskiville landed at New Plymouth over sixty years ago, from the ship Resolute, with her parents, the late Mr and Mrs W. N. Syme, who were amongst the earliest settlers of the Okato district, the name being synonymous with the pioneers who did so much to develop that part of the province. Mr? Baskiville married the late Mr Baskiville in the early eighties, living at Parihaka for some timeMr. Baskiville recalls »n a very interesting fashion the hardships and warm friendships of the early days on the coast, and revisiting Opunake after an absence of over forty years sees wonderful changes here.

Mrs Goring, wife of the late Major Goring, who played a big part in the early days ot this district, is now living at Havelock, Hawkes Bay. Her sister, the late Miss Dobie, is buried at Opunake.

Miss E. Crawford, of Timaru, ifspending a holiday in Opunake with her aunt, Mrs G. H. Hutton.

Mr A. Fisher, teller at the local branch of the Bank of NZ, left yesterday on his annual vacation. Mr Thomson, of the relief staff, is rilling his position here.

Mr A. F. Neilson, general man ager of the Piharr.a Dairy Co., leaves by the Maubganui on the 13th inst for Melbourne where he will repre sent New Zealand at. the conference of Australian dairy factory managers: and secretaries'. Professor Hun jjiker, the noted American scientist, will also attend the conference.
