Disturbed Society.

Clergyman's Denunciation

The Rev G H Kirks, retiring Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Queensland expressed the opinion that society was disturbed, and that the restless thunder of human ambition has been reverberating round the world in a roar. Thousands were to-day being ruled by despots who were slowly starving men to death. He declared that class hatred was being fomented in a way that augers ill for the days to come. Human life was being cheaply held. The love of pleasure was vitiating the tastes of the people,' with the result that they could hardly breathe air that was not charged with excitement. Profiteers, confidence men, loafers, gamblers and half dad, painted, smirking women were existent under a system that practised and fostered gamblers. These, he declared, were features of the present darkness through which the Church of Christ was at present passing.
