Opunake Hospital.
—;0 ; At the Hospital Board meeting on Wednesday, the Inspector-Genera! of. Hospitals (Dr T H A Valentine) wrote enquiring if any action had been taken by the board for the maternity cottage hospital at ;Opu - naks.
' The secretary reported having replied that tende s were advertised for the work, but the time for closing had to be extended. The board now had two tenders before it, one for £4860 and one for £6470. As the lowest figure was far more than ten per cent above the estimate (wl I :h was the limit allowed by the Minister,) the board had not the power to acc ;pt any of the tenders. In reply to the chahmxn, the se:retary said that the original estimate of the cost was /2SOO.
The-secretary suggested that the matter , be placed before the Depart ment, asking that they give the beard a lead. They could nol accept a tender at the price. Mr Young remarked that the Opunake people had been promised the hospital, and it seemed unfair if the board was not able to carry on.
Other members commented on the big difference between the'origin* al estimate and the tenders received, and the meeting finally decided to refer the matter to the Department.
