AN APPEAL.
Our readers are aware that a project is in hand for the erection in Opunake of a fitting memorial to the soldiers of: the Egmont County who were killed in the late war. To erect this memorial at least three hundred pounds will be needed, and people are again asked to subscribe to the fund and so bring about the early construction of the monument. We owe a great debt to these fallen soldiers,. and that debt will never be repaid by the erection of a stone or marble monument, but it will perpetuate for all time the memory of those who sacrificed their lives to save the Empire, and will be a con* starit reminder to future generations that there is no nobler duty than to sacrifice self in the service of all. It is wst the memory of the war-that is to be perpetuated in marble, but the memory of those gallant boys who fought as only New Zealanders can fight, to save their own country from the horrors of war. Everybody recognises and appreciates what these fallen soldier.s have done, and it now remains for those who could not go to make an effort towards establishing this monument to their memory. The opportunity to show their gratitude is now, by subscrib ing liberally to the fund. Let us not be niggardly m providing a lasting record of the names of those whose memory we desire to cherish aud honor. Subscription lists ;are in circulation throughout the county and Mr C. A. Trotter, ol Opunake, will be pleased to receive any donalions. These donations will be published as they come to hand.
