> JEFFRIE 8-JOHN SON. There are two hundred newspaper correspondents at Reno recording the final preparations for the Jeffrie--Johnson fight, compared with twelve American correspondents sent to the Basso-Japanese war. The great fight is to take place on the “ Glorious Fourth ” a day suited to make things fly if the darkie wins. Despite all the confidence reposed in Jeffries by bis immediate connections there is a deep rooted feeling amongst many Critics that Johnson has been bought* for the" occasion. This is also qualified by Govenor Gillet’s remark that “ any one with a grain of common sense can see that the whites will not allow the black-man to win.” Many people are also of opinion that Jeffries cannot strike the form he showed during the term of his championship. There is not the slightest doubt that the coming fight between (he black and white champions is eclipsing every other subject for interest, and will reach a tremendous pitch on the 4th—and if the darkie wins it will reach bursting point in America. Advices from Reno states that Jeffries, Sullivan, and Corbett have been reconciled.
The fighters are training steadily and in splendid condition. The State police are assembling to protect the fighters against any outbreak on account of race hatered. Interest in the encounter is intense.
Old followers of glove fights agree that this will be the last big fight in tbe*United States.
Betting is brisk and Jeffries is favorite, the odds on him being ten to six till Monday, but on Tuesday they ibortened to ten to seven.
The Beno grandstand bolds eighteen thousand. Already two thousand Beats have been sold at £lO each, and a thousand at £B. The lowest price is £2, making a possible gate of eighty thousand sterling. Prayers for the success of “ our colored brother ” are being offered in many African Methodist Churches in the United States. The Nevada militia will attend the arena on Monday to enforce order and protect Johnson, should a decision in his favor cause disorder. The Governor of Nevada announces that he will* himself be present to see that everything is fair and square. Johnson is being increasingly favored because of his magnificent condition.
