A Japanese Scare.
Perth, June 22. Some excitement was caused at Carnarvon by the report that a large one-funnelled steamer, painted grey, was anchored about the end of May near some reefs between Maud's Landing and Cape Farqutaar. Rowing boats were working between the steamer and the shore. Blacks put off to the steamer, and reported that on board were Chinese and that there were no white men.
It is conjectured that the steamer may have been a vessel prospecting for pearl shell, and it is also suggested that as the blacks cannot tell Chinese from Japanese, the mysterious vessel might have been a _ Japanese warship secretly surveying the coast.
