Opunake Railway.
A publio meeting wss convened by 'Mr D. Scott to form a railway league at Kapuni. About twenty persons were present, inolud iog be member for the district (Mr Dive.) Mr Stevenson ocoupied the chair. Mr Scott detailed the purpose of the meeting, and said that it would only be by concarted action on the part of the whole district that the railway would be put through. He thanked Mr Dive for being present, and asked him to address the meeting, Mr Dive, who is working quietly but thoroughly in the interests of the railway, and consolidating the settlers in the one purpose. After going over a deal of past history of the provisions made for a railway, gave the following reasons why the line should be constructed:—(l) The roads are breaking up in all directions; (2) in many instances a seoond, third, and even a fourth loan has been raised ; (3) he calculated that some of the land was paying as much as £5 per acre rates, whioh was oppressive and a burden on the settlers. Mr Dive suggested that the matter of route be left out of the controversy, and that all go for the railway and trust to the good sense of the Govern ment to construct it over the best route.
