Opunake Horticultural and INDUSTRIAL EXHIBIT SOCIETY

Patron, Mrs C. E. Major; president, Mr Geo. Tindle ; vice-presidents, Messrs S. Forsyth, R. Lambie, and M. J. Brennan; committee : Mesdames O’Brien, Tindle, Harding, Cassidy, Scott, Miss Pettigrew, Messrs T. Hickman, J. Pill, R- Warner, W. A. Harding and J. Stewart; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Pettigrew; auditor, Mr M. J. Brennan Thb third annual spring show in connection with the above Society was held on Wednesday last, and the weather being fine, it was visited by nearly 800 people. The Show, which was held a week earlier than last year, was up to the standard of previous ones. There was a slight falling off in one or two sections, but was made up in others. In pot plants the exhibits were equally as good as last year, but were not quite so numerous, the display being purely local. There was a fine display of daffodils and narcissi, which was an improvement on last year. _ There was also an increase in hyacinths. The decorated tables did . not look as well as formerly, while the mantlepieces were up to the usual standard. In the decorative section Miss Alice Pettigrew’s floral design was worthy of special notice, being a Maypole of narcissi and heath. ,A cross of forget-me-nots by Miss Pettigrew looked very pretty in the daylight. The Rev. Father Cognet’s special prize for hyacinths was awarded to Mrs O’Brien, while the same gentkman’s special for the best collection of ferns was won by Mr W. C. Dudley. The prize won by Mrs O’Brien for asparagus sprengeri, was the fifth she has taken with the same exhibit. Mrs Allan, of Pihama, had a nice exhibit of anemones, but they were disqualified for being a mixture of double and single. Mrs Hardings special for decorated hoop and stick was won by Miss Ella Stitt, and Mr Harding’s for native flowers, grasses and berries went to 1. Warner. Miss Pettigrew’s special for decorative table for girls was awarded to Miss Amy McGregor. Mr Armstrong’s special for gentleman s buttonhole was won by Miss Pettigrew. Mrs Cantle had a very good collection of curios, chiefly of Samoan articles, and Mr W. 0. Dudley also had on exhibition a good sample of stag fern.

POULTBY. The poultry section is one which has fully justified its inclusion in the catalogue, the entries being 58, as against 86 last year. A good deal of interest was evinced, and although there were a number of birds not equal to prize-winners, it is only by entering and seeing others that people recognise what is required. The best bird in the show was a langshan hen belonging to Mr W. A. Harding, which was awarded the champion prize, while the silver wyandotte hen of Mr D. Markham’s and Mr Booook’s white leghorn pullet were' described by the judge as very good indeed. Mr Hooker, the judge, gave a very interesting account of how to kill and pluck fowls, and gave an illustration by putting a fowl through the ordeal. •. Mrs G. Looney and ,Mr R. Woods had on exhibition some guinea hens, which attracted some attention.

children’s section. In this section there were fifty entries, in which there was some very good work. The map of the' South Island drawn by Miss Rita Stitt was admired by everyone, it being really well done. She also had on exhibition a map of the North Island, which took first prize at the last show. The writing was very good, the first prize being taken by Miss Mynan Ballard. GENERAL. _ _ -■ A hat trimming competition was won by Mr J, 0. Goldie, there being ten competitors. Mrs Ramsay was the judge. The Society had made arrangements for the display of exhibits, but from the way in which a number of things were knocked over on the tables it appears necessary for some kind of would be of more interest to visitors if exhibitors would place the names of plants, etc. on the exhibit, which would tend to further educate people in the fascinating occupation of horticulture. There were 275 entries, as against 207 last year. There was an increase of 22 in the poultry section, and 46 in the other sections. The sum of £lO 13s 6d was taken at the door.

The refreshments were ably managed by Mrs Looney and Miss Pettigrew, who had a number of assistants to help them. The officials of the society did their best to make the show the success it was, chief among whom was the painstaking secretary Mr J. Pettigrew. The following is the prize list: — POT PLANTS.
