The Opunake Railway.

In the report of the deputation to the Minister of Railways, two of the speakers made reference to an Act which authorised the construction of the railway. The legislation in question was “ The Financial Arrangements Act, 1878," clause 12 of which reads as follows: “ Out of the land revenue accuring within the Patea County on account of the sales of land situate between the Waingongoro River and the Taungatura river, and payable to the said County in terms of the sixth section of “ The Financial Arrangements Act, 1877," there shall be yearly applied three-fourths of such revenue, so payable to the said County as aforesaid, to the construction of a branch line of railway between the Mountain Road and the Opunake township; and the Governor may apply such moneys for such purposes, and make the said line as if it had been included in the Fourth Schedule to “The Public Works Act, 1876.” A question now to be inquired into is whether any money ever was “ earmarked ” as provided for in the Act, and what has become of it ?—Eltham Argus.
