The Opunake Times. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1905. TELEPHONE BUREAU.

On several occasions attempts have been made to get a telephone bureau in Opunake, but the promoters never met with sufficient encouragement to have it established, which was partly on account of the gap between here and Te Kiri. Since that has received attention the local people recognise the advantage it will be to the place, and are now quite prepared to subscribe for a telephone bureau. Mr Geo. W. Rogers, who recognised the necessity of such a convenience, waited on the business people on Monday, and was more than satisfied with bis result, as he secared the names of sixteen townsmen who will have the telephone connection. As it only requires six persons to subscribe before the authorities will take steps to accede to their requests, it may now be assumed that as soon as the department finds it convenient we will have the necessary connection in the town. This ia certainly a step in the right direction, as every improvement in a town must tend to greater facilitibs for the transaction of business, and all business people wbo are alive to the welfare of the place in which they are earning a livelihood, should assist in furthering any object which means success. A telephone is a great time-saver, and persons in business cauuot afford the time wasted in waiting at the post office to get connection with other places. Apart from that there iB a saving of time in connection with tradesmen in the town, which is also a consideration. It will entail more work in the local office, but we hope to see a larger staff at work there, and trust the day is not far off when there will be a delivery of letters in the town, which is one of the conveniences a town is entitled to that is making progress.
