Presentation to Mr Gray.
On Friday.»at New Plymouth, Mr Alfred Gray, recently appointed to the Opunake Sohool, was farewelled by the teachers of the school. As a token of esteem, too, a presentation, whioh took the form of a salad bowl in oak, and mounted in silver, was made to Mr Gray by the headmaster. Mr Dempsey, in making the presentation of bobalf of the teachers, referred to the fact that Mr Gray had been serving the school for a long time—a period of uine years.. A lengthy stay such as that was evidence of the mutual good feeling which prevailed. His departing friend - had many good qualities, his disciplinary powers and straightforwardness of pnrpose tendiug materially to keep up the tone of the school, Mr Dempsey was quite confident that Opunake bad obtained a thoroughly sound and practical teacher. These remarks were endorsed by Mr Bumside, who wished Mr. Gray every success in his new sphere. Mr Gray feelingly responded. He had come to the Central quite a youth, and what he had learned of teaching he had learned within its walls. Ho thanked Mr Dempsey .for the trouble be had taken to enlarge and develop his powers, and would do his best to see that these efforts should bear good fruit. Mr Gray was then entertained by the ladies at tea, and received much good advice of a varied nature. In the course of some reminiscences, Mr Dempsey mentioned as a coincidence that that day twenty years ago he had left Asbburton to take charge of the Central.—Taranaki Herald.
