Eltham-Opunake Railway LEAGUE.

A meeting of the Eltham branch of the above league was held in the Fire Brigade Station on Monday night, when there was a fair attendance of members, His Worship the Mayor presiding. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. Correspondence wag read from the Opunake branch with reference to the presentation of petition to Parliament, and refuting the allegations of the Argus that the circumstances of the presentation were ' suspicious.'—Received. After some discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Messrs Tristram and Symes, that His Worship the Mayor and the Hon. W. Carncross represent the Eltham bfanch on the deputation. The secretary, Mr Gumberworfch. handed in the petition signed by 850 residents of the district, over 250 being farmers along the line of route—the signatories adding the area of holdings and locality. The balance of the signatures are thos9 of the Eltham, Kaponga and Mangatoki tradespeople. It was resolved to acquaint the Opunake League with what had been done. BAWHITIBOA ROAD. Mr S. King, Omona, wrote asking that the matter of having a sum sufficient to carry the Bawhitiroa Road as far as the Whenuakura Bridge at an date, placed on the Estimates be again brought before the Government. Roughly speaking Mr King estimated that it would take £IOOO to complete the If miles yet to be built to the river. He further pointed out that the Bottlers have had notice to take their wives and families back within three months, and as that is simply impossible in the present state of the roads it will simply mean forfeiture. Mr Tayler was instructed to bring this matter prominently before the Minister of Public Works. COURTHOTJBE.
