The Premier’s Trip to the ISLANDS.
Sydney, June 14. The Manapouri has arrived from the Islands, and brings Fiji files containing an account of Mr Seddon’s visit; Owing to heavy weather the Tutanekai put in at Tonga, and it was decided] to pay a flying visit to Fiji. The vessel arrived at Suva on May 28th, and Mr Seddon was banquetted by the leading citizens. Replying to complimentary speeches, including a reference in favor of the federation of Fiji and New Zealand, Mr Seddon asked what was there to prevent a federation of the islands. New Zealand had taken a great interest in the Cook Group* and saved them falling into the hands of a foreign nation, and was stopping the other islands going in the same direction. He urged the necessity for regular steam services and cheaper fares between New Zealand the islands. A British protectorate has been proclaimed over Savage and Tonga islands. The Tutanekai sailed for Rarotonga next day. Mr Seddon is much benefited by the trip. Napier, Jnne 18. The Tutanekai, with the Premier and party, arrived from Raratonga early this morning, all well. The Premier’s health is fully restored, The steamer leaves for Wellington at 4 p.ra.
