PUNGAREHU.
(Oub Own Correspondent.)
Tbe Puugareku Racing Club being defunct, it has been decided to hand over the balance in baud—nearly £l9 —to the Pungarehu Hall Building Committee on condition that the whole amount is given iu prizes for an athletic sports meeting, any profits on the proceeds of which shall go to the Hall funds. Therefoie a large committee has been formed, and its first meeting was held ou Monday night, when a programme, consisting of thirteen events, which include two " hack races," for horses which have never been nominated for any race t and are owned by persons residing between the Waiau and Oakura rivers.
It was decided to hold the meeting at Pungarehu, on the old racecourse, ou Thursday, Bth December next. This will be a splendid chance for some of your Opunake boys to try conclusions before tbe big day which I understand is to be held on Boxing Day. The bon. secretary (Jas. Simpson) was authorised by the committee to advertise the programme in your paper, and I understand he will have it ready for your issue of Tuesday next -when all your readers will have an opportunity of seeing what can be done at Pungarehu. I regret to record. that measles have broken out here. So far only three families are affected. However, as a precaution against the disease spreading (and as only nine children were at school to-day) it was decided to close the school for a time, or un. til the epidemic is over. October 19.
