Humphries, W. W. Middleton, M. Dillon, M. Heath, M. Callander, Koi,

The annual fixture of the above Club came off on Mr Hickey’s course on Wednesday, and being favored with a fine day there was a very fair attendance, between 300 and 400 ‘being present. Several improvements to the saddling paddock and course had been effected since last year, and there was also a free horse paddock, both of which were of convenience to the visitors. The course was in good going order. The hon. secretary, Mr D. Markham, did his utmost to make everything pass off successfully, and the order in which he had his affairs reflected credit on his management. Mr F. Carrington made a good starter, and got all his fields well away. Mr J. Glare, as clerk of the course, kept all obstructions away thus giving a fair chance to all horses, and Mr P. Spillane was very attentive to riders at the weighing machine. Mr T. Knowles did a good business at the publican’s booth, and Mr Swaysland attended to the wants of the hungry. The racing, on the whole, was fairly good, some of the finishes being very close. Mr Crozier bad the most wins, securing four races out of seven—Flying, Otahi Stakes, Cup, and Rahotn Stakes ; Mr Clarke, the "Hurdles ; Mr McLeod, Maiden Welter ; Mr Grylls, the Trot. Mr Crozier came in first in the Hurdles with Nugget, but not having a jockey’s license he was protested against, and the race awarded to Foreman. As is characteristic of small meetings, every horse is sent for the stakes, and the public enjoy a race meeting far better when they know they are going to have a run for their money, and not see horses’ heads pulled off in the straight. A score or so of bookies made a vibration in the air a ! l day with their melodious voices. Unfortunately for some of the backers there were a few 7 so-called bookies taking wagers, and when the race was over they were not to be .found. The Opunake Brass Baud, under Bandmaster Ebbett, discoursed appreciative music during the day. Following are the results : HANDICAP HURDLE RACE, of 10 sovs; second horse to receive 1$ sovs from the stakes; 1\ miles ; over five flights of hurdles, 3ft 6in high. Mr W. From a fair start Foreman led over all the jumps. At the fourth hurdle Malme’s jockey got his foot caught on the side of a broken hurdle, and parted company with the mare. Foreman kept his lead till entering the straight, when Nugget caught him, and won as he liked on the post very hard held. A-protest was lodged against him and the race given to Foreman.
