Proposed Farewell Social.
About thirty ladies and gentlemen attended the meeting on Thursday evening in the Foresters’ Hall for the purpose of arranging a farewell social to Constable Twomey and Mrs Twomey. Mr Geo. Rogers, Chairman of the Town Board, presided. The Chairman briefly explained the object of the meeting, stating that Constable Tworaey had been stationed in Opunake for many years, during which time he had gained the respect and esteem of all classes for the conscientious manner in which he had carried out his duties, and it was with a general feeling of regret that news of his departure was received. At the request of a number of townspeople he had convened the meeting. He would call on Mr Scott to give any further information to the meeting. Mr W. D. Scott said as soon as it became known that Mr Twomey was to be promoted to Feilding, a very geneial desire was expressed that some recognition of the estimation in which he was held in the district should be shown. As Constable Twomey was debarred from accepting anything in the shape of a presentation, he would move that a farewell social be tendered to Constable Twomey and Mrs Twomey, and that a presentation bo made to Mrs Twomey. Seconded by Mr Knowles and carried. The following committee was then chosen to carry it out; —Messrs \V. D. Scott, J, M. Hickey, F. Des Forges, Christie, and J. Stewart, and the following ladies were to he asked to act as a ladies’ committee—Mesdamos Christie, W. W. Middleton, Fowler, Clarke, J. M. Hickey, Hcenan, G. W. Rogers, Stewart, Higgins, and Brennan. Resolved, That the social be held on Wednesday, 17th November, in the Town Hall. Resolved, That a charge of two shillings be made for admission. It was then decided that the committee meet in the Foresters’ Hall this evening to make all arrangements.
