At Stratford, on 22nd instant, we had bat a small muster of stock owing to the wet weather. There was also a small attendance of people, therefore little business was done. We quote—Springers, £3 5s to £5 ; empty cows, £1 5s to £2; 18-month steers, 28s to 33a 6d ; yearlings, 20s to 255. At our usual fortnightly sale at Hawera the yards were w’ell tilled with both cattle and sheep. The attendance was larger than of late, bidding more spirited, and every line was keenly competed for, resulting in most of the stock changing hands slightly in favor of vendors. We quote—Fat bullocks (light weights), L 4 10s to L 5; forward bullocks, L 3 6s to L 4 2s ; store bullocks, L2 9s to L 3 ; 18month steers, LI 12s to L2 ; fat cows, L 3 2s 6d to L 4 7s 8d ; empty cows and heifers, LI 9s to L2 2s; dairy cows and heifers, L 3 to L 4; yearlings (mixed), 15s to 28s 6d. Sheep —Forward ewes, 7s; fat sheep, 12s 5d ; ewes and lambs, 9a 6d. On 28th instant we held our usual fortnightly sale at Okaiawa, when the yards were well filled with cattle, chiefly young stock. Although the day was wet we succeeded in disposing of nearly all the cattle yarded. We quote—2 to 2J-year steers, L2 17s to L3Bs ; 18-month to 2-year steers, 83s 6d to 40s; yearlings (mixed), 20s 6d to 28s 6d; fat cows, L 3 5s to L 3 12s6d; dairy cows and heifers, L 3 10s to L 4 2s 6d ; empty heifers, LI 12s 6d to L2 2s. Hr Newton King’s Weekly Report. New Plymouth, October 28. Cattle—At Stratford, on Tuesday, cattle were yarded far in excess of the number advertised, the yards being very full—Why will not farmers enter stock for sale ? How is it to be expected that buyers will come from a distance when there are only a small number advertised ? Tuesday’s sale was the most successful I have had for some months, nearly everything being sold, either at the hammer or privately. One or two nice pens of 3J to 4year bullocks came forward and were sold at improved prices; empty heifers also met with more enquiry and were all quitted at rates in advance of late quotations. Springing heifers were not so saleable ; other lines were without alteration. I quote—Calves, 8s to 13s ; yearlings, 16s 6d to 21s; 12 to 18-month mixed, 23s to 26s ; 18-month steers, 27s to 32s ; 2-year do, 375; 3£ to 4-year bullocks, L 3 5s to L 3 14s ; empty heifers, 33s to 395; springers, L2 12s 6d to L2 15s ; store cows, 10s to 345. At Tariki Eoad on Wednesday, I held a clearing sale of Mr Geo, Cappers farm stock, contractors’ plant, &c. The attendance was very large, and nearly everything sold at satisfactory prices. Cows in milk made £3 to L 7 ; spongers, £4 to £6 15s ; store do., £1 7a 6d to £1 15s : draught horses, £l3 17s 6d to £24; working bullocks, £5 2s 6d to £l7 per pair ; contractors plant and sundries made satisfactory prices. At Frankley Eoad the same day, I sold Messrs O’Oarroll Bros’ dairy stock. The cows were a medium lot, and in low condition, and therefore did not make big prices. Cows in milk made £1 to £5: springers 50s to 100 s. At Waiwakaiho on Thursday, the yards were full, with good attendance. Bidding was brisker than for some time, and nearly every line was sold at the hammer. Good young cattle, aud empty heifers showed most improvement, there being an unsatisfied demand for good 12 to 18-raonths steers, Springing heifers and dairy cows were dull, and hard to quit. I quote Calves, 6s 6d to 16s ; mixed yearlings, 17s to 23s 6d; 18-months steers, 81s to 52s 6d; empty heifers, 31s to 34s ; springing do., £2 2s to L2 10s ; store cows, 18s to 345.
