The Opunake Times. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1897. THE JETTY.
A start was made on Wednesday with the re-erection of the jetty, and it is anticipated that it will be erected in ten weeks. We are extremely pleased to see the work put in hand as the want of the wharf has been very much felt for a long time past. Steamers have had to pass or leave before completing discharging owing to the surf, when they could have worked in comfort at the.wharf. When it is re-erected we expect to see a large flow of trade to this port and the increased trade will, no doubt, have the effect of reducing the rate of freight which will be a still further iuducement to shippers to use this port. We hope also now that work has actually begun and that it will not be long until those who are building it will be drawing on the Company’s treasury, that those who have taken shares in the Company will do their utmost to pay up their calls promptly and help the directors in every way they can, as they have earned the thanks of the people of the district for the manner in which, under very adverse circumstances, they have stuck to their posts.
