A Police Raid.
Dunedin, September 18,
Detectives O'Brien and McGrath this afternoon raided the shop in the Arcade, of Barnett and Grant, turf commission agents, and arrested Grant and two clerks named Broad and Whelan. Grant was charged with being the occupier of premises where tote betting was carried on, and the clerks with aiding and abetting. The polioe seized the books found in the office. Those arrested were bailed out. It is understood another place was raided, but no evidence was found to show it was used for betting purposes. September 19. Peter Grant and assistants charged at the Police Court with keeping a common gaming house were remanded on the application of the police till Thursday in order that a Stipendiary Magistrate may hear the case. All the books removed from the premises wheD the raid was made were ordered to be returned to Grant on promising to produce them at the hearing.
