AWATUNA.
(Our Own Correspondent). The factory has started operations here again. It is running every other day. I saw some time ago by the Eltham Road correspondent that a Town Hall was to be built at the Punehu Township, but from what I can find out the bottom has fallen out of the project. He reckoned that the Awatuna hall would have to look to its laurels, but it does not seem much like it when the committee are calling tenders for the erection of rooms at the back of the hall for refreshments, and intend using the two present rooms for dressing rooms, instead of the makeshift place we have had before. We were favored by a concert given us by Mr Rush last Wednesday. He had to perform to a rather small audience. Rough weather kept a good few from attending, and they missed a treat, as it was well worth going to hear. Both his singing, and playing on piano and violin were very good. Our assistant school teacher, Miss Wallace, is leaving here to resume duties as assistant at Hurleyville, and her place is to be filled by a young man by the name of Mr Charles Hill. The School Committee have been busy with the settlers around in logging and gravelling the school yard, which was greatly needed, both for the playground and the children. We had a meeting here on the 21st re the Opunake-Eltham railway. There were about 40 persons present. Mr Proudlock occupied the chair and read the notice re meeting. It was proposed and seconded that a resolution the same as the Opunake one be sent to Wellington. Mr H. S. Bryant was elected hon. secretary and treasurer, and about 25 fresh names were added to the membership of the league here, which makes a total of about 40 to 50.
