Old Age Pensions.

Melbourne, August 15. Mr Williamson, theatrical manager, examined by the Old Age Pensions Commission, strongly opposed the penny theatre and other amusement tax upon tickets and said it would fall upon the management, who could not afford it. Already the profession was precarious and there were many failures. It would mean the ruin of the theatrical profession. Betting and drinking were the principal causes of poverty and should be made to pay for it. Bryon Moore, Secretary of the Victorian Racing Club, opposed the tax in the form proposed, but was favourable to the totalisator being .fcarted by the club which distributed shree quarters of a million in prize money. Major War dell, Secretary of the Melbourne Cricket Club said it would be un-English to tax out-door sports.
