The Opunake Times. FRIDAY, AUGUST 13, 1897.

The s.s. Aorero arrived from South this morning. Messrs Nolan, Tonks and Co’s Opunake stock sale takes place on Tuesday next. Fred Hurrey, a well-known settler at Alton (near Patea) committed suicide on Saturday by cutting his throat with a batcher’s knife, John J. Hart, senior, a highly-respected settler of Mailborough, was thrown from his horse near Havelock on Saturday night and killed. Deceased was a very old Freemason. Mr J. Strachan Greig has been appointed valuer under the Government Valuation Act for the Opunake Town District and Parihaka Riding. He is at present in Opunake, and is staying at Knowles’ Hotel. Mr Jellicoe has advised Mr Cowan that he is entitled to the Awarua seat, and some other lawyers here take the same view. The Times says the matter will probably be fought out in the election court. Mr J. Strach in Greig notilio; that he has a very lucrative business for sale, situated on the East Road. The turn over during the past yeai was L 3,600 and it can be worked on a very small stock. This should prove a good opening for a man with limited capital. Mr H. W. Noi thcroft, S.M., stated in Wanganui Court on Monday that when a creditor brought a judgment debtor into Court it was understood he undertook to prove that the debtor had the means to pay. The Typographical Conference delegates at Wellington waited on the Acting-Premier and Mr Hall-Jones, the Minister in charge of the Government Printing Offices, with the object of having Government advertising and printing in the four chief centres of the colony confined to union offices, and securing a continuance of the existing system of engaging compositors for sessional work through the Typographical Association. Y,, was sick with rheumatism for live months In speaking of it, Mr Robinson says: "Chamberlain’s Pain Balm is the only thing that gave her rest from pain.
