Eltham Railway League.

The third meeting of the Executive of the Auckland-Taranaki Railway League was held on Tuesday evening last, there being present —Chairman, Mr James Boddie, Secretary, Mr S. J. Binning ; Treasurer. Mr C. A. Wilkinson r Messrs G. W. Taylor, T. C. Stanners, C. Martin ; also Mr A. McPhail.

Chief item of correspondence was a letter from Mr S. Vaile, of Auckland, giving details ,of his light railway scheme for the North Island. This scheme provides for a line from Eltham to To Kuiti, from Motorua to Gisborne, from Gisborne to Napier, and a central line to connect the Trunk Railway from Rotorua-Gisborne line. It was resolved to defer farther consideration of the scheme until after consultation with Gisborne and other Railway Leagues. The question of railway to Opunake was also entered into. It was decided to communicate with the Opunake League and ask them to arrange public meetings at Mangatoki, Kaponga, Awatuna, and Mauaia, for the purpose of thoroughly testing public feeling. Should the settlers prove favorable this line would then be put in as part of the scheme. The Secretary was instructed to draft code of rules and regulations on the lines of those adopted by the Gisborne League. The agitation would entail a large amount of expense in the way of advertising, printing, public meetings, and the collection of necessary data. It was determined to write to all those whose interests were more particularly identified with the construction of the line, and ask them for special donations in addition to the ordinary subscription. In view of the fact of many of the leading citizens of Hawera had expressed a sympathy with the object of the league, it was resolved to write to the mayor of that town asking him to convene a meeting at an early date with the object of ventilating the question, and if possible of forming a branch league. The meeting then adjourned sine die, —Settler,
