Opunake Racing Club.

A general meeting of the members of the Opunake Racing Club was held on Monday evening, Mr Brennan in the chair.

The Chairman explained that the meeting had been called in accordance with a wish expressed at a committee meeting held some six weeks previously in order to have an interim statement of the Club’s position laid before the members. He explained that when the Club procured the course at Pihama it was resolved that any expenditure there should be on a permanent basis, and the previous year, besides paying £73 off the purchase money of the course, £236 had been spent in erection of a grandstand, fencing, and other requisites. In order to carry out these improvements it was found necessary to negotiate an overdraft with the IBank of £7l. The club therefore started this year with this £7l to rub off. Further permanent improvement were effected last year to the extent of £54, which also had to be provided for. The profit made on the meeting was about £7O, so that to pay for the further improvements it would require the continuance of an overdraift of about £53 instead of £7l which they had opened the year with which he thought was very satisfactory.

The Treasurer then read the statement of accounts which was as follows : 1896. Receipts.

The members expressed themselves quite satisfied with the Club’s position, more especially as two of the races at the last meeting had proved a complete freeze. At the general meeting in September last the election of an auditor for the current year was omitted, and on the motion jf Mr H. Wagstaff seconded by Mr M. Callander Mr H. J. Newman was elected.
