Cretan Trouble.
MATTERS COMING TO A HEAD. MOSLEMS STARVING. Athens, March 2. The Cretans by capturing Fort Stavaros and 3000 prisoners, imperil the safety of Canados. Segaunis stated in the Chamber that the combined fleets are bombarding Crete, and that a savage, impious and unjust Note had been issued by the Powers acquainting Greece that the autonomy conceded to Crete grants equal rights to Moslems and and Christians, and requires the recall of the fleet and troops. London, March 2. A Blue Book issued indicates that last year Lord Salisbury prevented the Powers from blockading Greece, and last August suggested the present settlement of the Cretan difficulty. The Powers have allowed Greece four days within which to yield to their ultimatum. Athens, March 2. The Governor of Oandia with an armed force of Moslems fought the Christians. Several were killed on both sides. The Admiral commanding the combined fleets warned the Governor not to repeat the action. King George will probably withdraw the fleet from Crete, and it is expected he will direct Colonel Vassos to retire into the interior and maintain guerilla warfare, the King being confident the Powers will not suppress this. The Admirals’ foreign fleets prevented a Turkish frigate assisting to repel an attack on a convoy trying to re-victual at Malaxa. Thirty thousand Moslems at Heraklion are in danger of starving. They are entreating the Powers to hasten a settlement of the difficulty. Constantinople, March 2. One hundred and ninety-two battallions of Turkish troops are on the Greek frontier. The Sultan gave twelve million francs towards the equipment of the of the force. Athens, March 8. Continuous fighting is taking place near Retimo. A quantity of supplies and stores for those engaged in Red Cross work has been landed at Candia, but the landing of general provisions is forbidden.
