Mr Newton King’s Weekly Report

New Plymouth, October 24. At Stratford, on Friday, the 2nd inst., I held a clearing sale of Mr W. Strickland’s dairy stock. The cows were a fair lot, but the absence of data as to calving, and several being backward militated against high prices being obtained. Springers made £4 to £5 2s 6d; late calvers, 42s 6d to £3 7s 6d. At the same yards, on Monday, I sold Mr A’Court’s dairy. There was a good attendance and brisk competition for most lines, and prices were satisfactory on the whole. Springers made £4 10s to £5 10s; late calvers, £3 17s 6d fo to £4 ss. At Stoney River, on Wednesday, the yards were full. Competition was brisk and though prices did not show much improvement, nearly every line was sold at the hammer. Calves made 17s to 23s Gd ; yearlings, 24s to 29s 6d ; 15 to 18-months mixed, 43s 6d to 45s ; 2-year steers, 40s to 48s Od ; 2J-year do, 555; springing heifers, 53s Od to £4 ; 3Jyear steers, £3 8s ; store cows £1 10s to £2 7s.

At Huirangi, on Wednesday, Mr Rowe’s fine herd of milkers attracted a good number of buyers. The cows were a very good lot, and considering the lateness of the season, and that a good many had calved, prices were very satisfactory. Cows in milk made £4 5s to £6 10s ; springers, £4 os to £8 10s 6d.
