Bachelors’ Ball at Awatuna.
The above event, -which has now become an annual affair, came off in the Awatuna Hall on Wednesday evening, and was a great success socially and financially. Messrs W. Watson. T. Brooker, T. Whitmore, E. Kappley, W. Oliver, J.jTaylor, and W. Car vis were appointed the committee to carry out the work, and their efforts to please one and all were fully appreciated by the success of the evening. They went to considerable trouble in procuring nikaus for the decorations, which gave the hall a pleasing effect, as also the Chinese lanterns which were hung all round the room. The floor was in splendid order—for which Awatuna is noted —which added to the ease of the dancers, although the room was rather too full for comfortable dancing. Mr F. Boston, of Okaiawa, gave every satisfaction as musician, while Messrs Coxhead and W. Watson fulfilled the duties of M.C’s. The supper was all that could be wished for, the committee supplied the materials, and Mr Kappeley kindly undertook the cooking. There were between 60 and 70 couples present, visitors having gone from all round the district. Mr Clare drove a large brake from Opunake, and a nu nber cf others went in buggies and on horseback. About £l2 was taken at the door, and profit will go towards decreasing the debt on the hall, which will bring it down to about 20 odd pounds. The people of Awatuna are to be congratulated on the efforts that they make to give the town a hall free of debt, and as it is a scattered district such functions as the above proves that visitors are well attended to when they go so many miles to partake in the amusements which are got up for such a good object.
