Attempted Suicide.

Nelson, August 25.

At about 5 o’clock last evening a man, aged 27, who gave the name of John Shannon, walked into the Police Station and gave himself in charge, stating that ho had cut his throat. He had a -handkerchief tied round his neck, and his coat was buttoned up.

Dr Roberts was instantly called, and the man was removed to the hospital, but though he has a shocking flesh wound, and the windpipe is partly severed, his life is not deemed to be in danger. The deed was committed at the back of a boardinghouse where he was staying, and he walked a quarter of a mile to the police station. Shannon is a commercial traveller, representing a Wellington jeweller, but has friends in Hokitika. It seems that Shanuon received letters that caused him trouble, aud though he was previously not known to drink, he gave way to liquor, and subsequently committed the rash act.
