The Opunake Times. FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 1896. WEST COAST SETTLEMENT RESERVES.

In our last issue we published a letter from Mr G. W. Gane, quoting sections of schedule to the West Coast Settlements Reserves Act 1892, by which it would appear that residence on the leased lands was compulsory. Under the 1892 Act residence could be dispensed with if the lessee resided on contiguous lands which were only divided by a road or stream. Taking the 1892 Act alone Mr Gane is quite right, but he overlooked the Amending Act of 1893, which the Native Reserves Agent draws cur attention to. Under section nine the words “ or by such interval of space as the Public Trustee may determine in each case ” are added to the clause defining contiguity. It will therefore be seen that there is hotbing'to prevent a man living in Sydney or Timbuotoo taking up a lease, provided that the Public Trustee is satisfied with the interval of space between his place of residence and the section leased.
