Heavy Weather in the South.
Christchuech, July 23.
The heavy rain, accompanied with violent easterly wind, continued during last night, and to-day a good deal . of damaga was done by slips. -, At Lyttelton a large double house on the Dampier's Bay Road, occupied by families named Fenton and Adams, was wrecked at- 2.30 this morning, and the occupants had to make the best of their way out through the broken windows. On the Governor's Bay road a cottage owned by J. Holmes was completely turned round by a slip. The Taupo left port at 8 a.m. for Wellington, but returned at 11 a.m., being quite unable to make headway against the sea and wind. The Wakatu, Talune, Te Anau and Flora are all weather-bound. Dunedin, July 23. Bain fell steadily for about 30 hours, but cleared up between 6 and 8 tonight, only to resume again. The drains in South Dunedin, St. Kilda, and the lower portions of Caversham proved inadequate, and there are large sheets of water in many places, and considerable damage has been done in some of the houses.
