Banking Committee.

Wellington, July 13

The Banking Committee of the House of Representatives met this morning. All the members were present. On the motion of the Premier, seconded by the Hon J. McKenzie, Mr Graham was unanimously elected Chairman. Mr Seddon moved that the Chairman communicate with the Committee appointed by the Legislative Council, and asked that the Committee meet the House Committee in joint conference. Mr Tanner seconded.

Mr George Hutchison moved as an amendment, That in view of the fact that five out of the ten members of the Committee appointed by the Legislative Council were members of the Committee of the Legislative Council that last session sat with the Committee of the House of Representatives, as a Joint Secret Committee, which reported in favor of the legislation passed last session, which is part of subject matter now to be enquired into, this committee refrains from meeting or conferring with such Committee appointed by the Legislative Council. Mr Maslin seconded the amendment.

Mr Seddon said the amendment was premature at the present stage, and two separate enquiries would be a spectacle which should not be brought about until the House Committee had exhausted every means to arrange a joint committee.

Amendment was lost by 8 to 2, only the mover and seconder voting for it.

Mr Scddou’s motion was then agreed to and a sub-coramitteo was then appointed to arrange the order of business, and the question of the counsel was deferred till the Joint Committee met.
