The Players in their second innings made 120, the Australians thus winning by an innings and 187 runs.
LEICESTERSHIRE MATCH.
London, July 12.
The Australians began a match today against at Leicester. The county team is composed of Pougher, Woodcock, Geeson, Wright, Tomlin, Marriott, Knight, Whiteside, Holland, De Trafford and Coe. The weather was fine and the wicket excellent, but the attendance was only moderate. Johns, Trott and MeKibben are standing out of the Colonial team. The Australians have lost three wickets for 229 runs. Iredale, who has been batting so consistently lately, was dismissed without scoring, but not so Darling and Giffen. The former’s score now stands at 143 (not out), while the South Australian increased his aggregate by 67. Donnan, too, showed fine form, and retired with the creditable score of 66.
July 14.
The attendance on the second day was again small. The weather was fine and the wicket still played excellently. By lunch time the Colonials had advanced their score to 423 for the .loss of one more wicket. Darling just failed to reach 200, being out for the fine score of 194, which brings his aggregate to above 1000. Gregory is still in with 75 to his credit.
London, July 15.
Darling batted for six hours and a half and gave only two chances. His score included one hit for five and twenty-one fours.
Adelaide, July 14.
A letter has been received from Jones stating that he has signed an agreement with the Sussex County Club as a ground bowler for a term of five years from the opening of next cricketing season: The salary will be £365 a year, with a and all expenses paid. Jones returns to Adelaide at the conclusion of the present tour, and will leave for England with his family in March next.
The New Zealand Cricket Council has decided to accent the terms offered by the Australians to take half the gross admission money. The council resolved that the four provinces to which the matches be allotted be asked to guarantee 50 pec cent gross takings with the minimum guarantee to the council, £l5O. It was decided that the proposed tour to Australia during 1896-97 be abandoned on account of the visit to New Zealand of the Australian eleven.
