London, May 16. The Esses match was resumed, when the Australians continued their first innings, and were disposed of for 223. Hill played a splendid innings for 73 before ho was bowled by Mead. • Essex then began their second innings, and owing to the fine bowling of Trumble were all dismissed for a total of 149. The chief scorers were —Carpenter 50, Perrin 20, Lucas 16, Bull 30. This left the Australians 93 to win, , which were made with the loss of T” three wickets. The highest scorers were—Giffen 19, Iredale (not out) 48, Trott (not out) 20. MATCH AGAINST AN ENGLISH ELEVEN. London, May 19. The match is being played on the Crystal Palace ground. The Marylebone Cricket Club has engaged Harry, the Victorian cricketer. London, May 20. # Johns made his first appearance behind the wickets at the Crystal Palace ground and performed with credit.

Donnan and Darling by free and stylish batting raised the score to 96. Rawling was then put on and met with considerable success for a time. Among his victims were Giffen and Trott. Gregory, however, made a lengthened stand and hit with such vigor that at the call of time only six wickets were down for 264, and the little Sydney crack being still in with 97 to his credit. There was splendid weather for the match to-day, and a large attendance of the public. The wicket played very well. The Australians first innings closed for 370, the additional scorers being— Iredale, c Hillyard, b Mold ... 21 Gregory, b Pougher ... *... 154 Hill, c Smith, b Mold ... 41 Trumble, c Trafford, b Pougher 40 With 265 to the bad the Englishmen began their second innings, but a rot set in, the whole team being disposed of for the wretchedly small score of 39, of which Ward (not out) made 14 and Mold 8. The Australians thus won by an innings and 226 runs.

Giffen was in excellent form, and cook seven wickets for 15 runs, and Jones three for 20.
