MASSACRE AT MADAGASCAR. Paris, May 12.
Bandits massacred throe French settlers at Imorina in Madagascar. The settlers offered heroic resistance for two hours, during which 40 of the bandits were killed. An armed expedition has gone in pursuit of the murderers.
the la;.e BARON HIRSCH. Berlin, May 12. The late Baron Hirsch bequeathed a million francs to a benevolent institution in Moravia. Shares in colonising societies were equally divided between London, Berlin. Frankfert and Brussels. Baroness Hirsch was made residuary legatee. JAMESON’S TRIAL. London, May 12. ' Harksley, solicitor, has published a statement,* at the request of Jameson, exonerating the Chartered Co., from complicity in the raid. The directors of the company cabled to Cecil Rhodes stating that Kruger’s revelations have caused universal excitement, in consequence of which they hesitated to accept his resignation. Sir 0. Rhodes has replied, asking them to defer final decision in the matter, and the directors agreed to do so. N.S.W. POLITICS. Sydney, May 14. The speech from the Throne at the opening of Parliament is expected to be of considerable length, and that it will embody the policy enunciated by the Premier. One of the subjects receiving early attention will be the construction of light railways ; also the introduction of a measure for the Extension of the Chinese Restriction Act to other colored races. A bill to facihte resumption of large estates for the purpose of promoting closer settlement will be brought down, and, while Parliament will not be invited to deal comprehensively with local Government, a palliative in the shape of improvement in municipal laws and proceeding for municipal loans under Government guarantee will be introduced.

The Premier admits that the Cuban rebellion must result in autonomy being granted. Mere reforms would be useless. The United States Government again demands indemnity for planters. The Spanish Council will finally determine the sentences of the prisoners. London, May 12. The Oobden Club has passed a resolution of regret at the death of Sir H. Parkes. Lord Salisbury has strongly urged the Powers, especially Russia, to prevent forcible conversioa of the Armenians.

At the wool sales the competition was strong, and best values of the series obtained.
Mr W. P. Reeves real a paper at the Colonial Institute, in which he described in eloquent language the beauties of New Zealand.
The personalty of Prince Henry ot Batteuburg has been sworn at £IOOO. The Government has offered Huddart, Parker and Co a subsidy of £6OOO annually to extend to Vancouver service to Queensland. . New York, May 12.

Brussels, May 13,
The murder of Madame Henry in Brussels has Jed to the capture of a band of criminals commanded by Courtois, ex-police inspector, who are suspected of many murders and robberies, including the robbery of the Countess of Flanders’ jewels. Perth, May 13. The steamer Asphodel had a disastrous voyage from the Eastern colonies. She encountered the full force of a fierce gale, during which she lost 95 bullocks, 900 sheep, 40 horses, and 20 pigs. The balance were lauded in a pitiable condition. Sydney, May 12.
News has been received from ’Frisco that the barque Centaur was destroyed by fire at sea. She was bound to Brisbane with a cargo of wheat. Hareford’s story has been found to be a fabrication. There is reason to believe he is not altogether unacqainted with New Zealand gaols and the authorities of the latter colony believe ho is identical with the prisoner who essapod from custody some time ago. Sydney. May 18.
The full Court is hearing Meagher’s and Dean’s appeals. The first point, viz., that the indictment was bad, was decided against appellants. The second point, that Meagher’s speeches in Parliament were inadmissable as evidence, is now being argued. Melbouene, May 13.
George Chaffey has tiled his schedule. The liabilities are estimated at £402,500, and the assets at £SBOO.
