The Butter Grading Business.

Mr McEwen, the New Zealand dairy expert, who is especially wellknown iq Taranaki, told the Victorian farmers that he was not in favor of the Government continuing to freeze or grade butter, but considered it should gradually withdraw these branches, and give greater assistance to dairying educationally. We are much indebted to -Mr ' McEwen for these opinions, in view of the fact that we have looked upon the grading of butter by Government iu this Colony as a useless waste of public money, and as not in any way tending to ensure for dairy farmers the best prices for butter in the London market, which is the paramount desideratum of the industry. The less State interference we have in regard to commercial and industrial enterprise the better for all concerned. It is ridiculous to spend money in maintaining a host of experts *in connection with an industry w,hich can be more economically and more successfully promoted and managed by private.enterprise.—Post.
