THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION.

Captain Rfssell, in his address at Auckland, had his sword sharpened up for the occasion, and dealt some very telling blows at the Government in connection with their evident care for themselves. He pointed out that it was not the Government of two years ago, as Mr Reeves, whom he considered the only true Liberal of that Government, had gone away from New Zealand, Mr Baliance was dead, and Sir Patrick Buckley and Mr Montgomery had left the Cabinet. The head had gone and the tail was going. He contended that they had not worked to benefit the people, but had taken every care of themselves individually. The Premier was selfappointed to the Assets Board and got a salary for it; the Minister of Labor bad gone to England on a permanent billet as Agent-General (£ISOO a year); another had become a Supreme Court Judge (£ISOO a year); whilst the Minister for* Lands and the Treasurer became salaried members of boards. This is true Liberalism from their standpoint, be liberal with the taxpayers’ money for their own benefit. He also said it would be found if people enquired that it was only personal friends who had been promoted in offices of State.
