OAONUI.
(Our own Correspondent.) The social and dance given by the people as a mark of respect to Mr G. W. Gare f< r the trouble and untiring efforts he has taken in the a u;e of education, came off on Friday evening. Mr Malcolm was voted to the chair, and explained that the object of the meeting was to thank Mr Gane for the energy and trouble he had given to school matters in the district. Mr Silvester and Mr Phillips also spoke in high terms of the trouble taken by Mr Gane, and said that the thanks of the community were due to him for his efforts. Mr G. W. Gane, in thanking the people for their expressions of goodwill, said he was glad to see that his efforts were appreciated, and that he would be only too glad to go to the same trouble again in the cause of education. _ # After three cheers were given for Mr Gane, several musical items were performed, after which tea and cake were distributed with a lavish hand. The school was then cleared for dancing, which .was kept up until four next morning.
