Leonard Harper was formally before the conrt on Monday morning, in Wellingtonand finally discharged. Hon Mr Ward addressed a crowded meeting at Winton, Invercargill, speaking for nearly three hours and a half, and received an enthusiastic reception. He refsrred to attacks upon him in his private capacity as the work of a lot of dastardly cowards, who opposed him in politics and sought to pull him down. There were people walking about Invercargill whom he had saved from bankruptcy, but who now were only too glad to go about carrying tales and repeating idle gossip. - Dealing with loans, he said they must expect in future an increase in loans as they would have to provide a ileet for their protection. The time was not distant when many millions would have to be obtained for defences, besides other things. He claimed that the Government had maintained a sound financial position and stocks were now higher than ever in the history of the colony. In return they had received nothing but contumely and insult. A motion of thanks’and confidence in Mr Ward and the Governmsnt was carried unauimo Usly.
