The Christchurch Milk Supply.
Christchurch, February 25. At a meeting of the City Council tonight the Sanitary Committee reported that they had visited some of the dairies which provided the city milk supply. Of 418 cows hurriedly inspected many were not in good condition,.four were decidedly tuberculous, one was cancerous, and one had a suspicious tumor on the neck. Of 32 dairies visited, seven were in a dirty condition. Although it had been impossible to visit all dairies, the committee had seen enough to convince them that steps should be taken promptly to secure, as far as possible, a pure supply of milk for the city. The committee recommended the appointment of an inspector of dairies, the registration of persons who sold milk, the milk sold in town to be frequently tested, the granting of special certificates to dairies where the appliances, surroundings, and stock were first-class.
The consideration of the report was deferred to the next meeting of the Council.
