Waimate Road Board.

The ordinary meeting of the above Board was held on Wednesday, there being present:—Messrs McCarthy (chairman), Budge, Borrie, Blennerhassett, Watson, Pearce and Stevenson. AN OLD CLAIM. W. Aikman, who has returned from a visit to England, wrote claiming payment for seventy-five yards gravel laid on Patiki Road.—Held over. ROWAN ROAD. J. Routley applied for d.p. thirds to be expended in repairing a very bad place. Agreed to expend land funds from blocks x. and xi. on Upper Rowan Road. (Watson-McCarthy.) oeo road. K. Kappley complained of the bad condition of a culvert on this road. — Foreman to report. REPAIRING CULVERTS. Resolved, That the foreman report on the condition .of the culverts on the Oeo, Omuturangi, Upper Taikatu and Rama Roads. (Borrie-Blennerhas-sett.) KIRI ROAD. D. M. Warren wrote asking for thirty or forty chains to be widened below the ford. Unexpended balance (if any) of £5 voted for the ford to be expended where requested. OPUNAKE-STRATFORD ROAD. J. M. Cole and G. R. Boleyn wrote urging that work should be done out of thirds in hand of county. Mr Watson said this was a very serious matter to the settlers, as there was only a short time left during which the work could be done. —Resolved, That as the money is still in in the hands of the County Council this Board cannot anticipate it by the expenditure asked for, but will attend to the matter on receipt of money. PUNEHU VILLAGE. J. R. Stewart wrote asking the Board to do some work. Agreed to expend £ls. EDUCATION RESERNE. Resolved, That this Board protests against the proposed changing of the purpose of the reserve for secondary education at Patea. RATES IN ARREAR. The clerk reported that £9OO road and county rates had been collected and that tljere was £I4OO still outstanding. Resolved, That all rates outstanding on 28lh February be sued for, MANGAWHERO ROAD. T. Bridge wrote asking that the

contract on the Mangawhero Eoad be continued to the extent of the land fund credits, £G 14s lOd, supplemented by a grant of £6 10s from the general rates. He would guarantee the due receipt of d.p. moneys not yet in hands of the Board by leaving with the Board his cheque for the amount. Agreed to. GRASS ON ROADS. W. Wichman applied for a refund of 20s which be had offered for grass seed on the Makaka Eoads. Declined. native lands. A return showed that native rates in the district amounted to £54 yearly and a demand had been made for a guarantee of a year’s rate. UPPER OEO ROAD. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote, agreeing to the thirds accrued from Sections 7 and 9, Block V, to Block IX. Information was received that £BSO is now available for the Oeo Eoad loan, watino road. J. McCarthy, 0. Fischer, D. M. Holmes, and J. S. Tosland wrote asking that the accrued thirds from their sections be at once expended on the lower part of this road.—No funds, the road being in debt £4 5s 2d. Donald McGregor wrote urging the Board to proceed without delay with the expenditure of all available moneys.—Agreed to do so. The Treasury wrote informing the Board that £4OO loan is now available. GENERAL RATES EXPENDITURE. After a, discussion, in which nearly every member expressed the opinion that it would be highly desirable to have some system agreed upon for the expenditure of the surplus rates, it was resolved that all rates accruing to sections abutting on the Elthanx Eoad west be expended in repairing that road. (Watson-Blennerhasset.) It was further agreed that the clerk should get out a statement for next meeting showing the available balance of rates' after working expenses had been provided for so that an allocation might be made to the several roads. TENDERS. Eesolved that Messers Blennerhasset, Borrie, and Stevenson be a committee to deal with tenders for Manaia and Inaha Eoads.-(Watson —Budge.) Mr Pearce dissented, owing to the transfer from Sutherland Eoad to the Manaia Eoad of the sum of £l5O. foreman’s report.

Auroa Eoad.—The fence near the gravel pit does not enroach on the road as was alleged. Skeet Eoad, west of Manaia Eoad. —Eecommendcd that several cuttings should be widened in order to allow room for water-tables; steep grades should le reduced. Suggested that rates from Glenn and Oeo Eoads be used for this work.

South Road—As only £llß out of the £BIB said to be in the hands of the county for this road is available for the road westward of the Inaha stream, something must be deleted from the proposed works. He suggested £5 be expended on the present bridge over the Ouri, and that £515 for a new bridge be omitted from the schedule of the works proposed. Watino Road.—Referred to necessity for finding an outlet over private lands for the proposed drain. The report was adopted. ACCOUNTS.
