Mr H. J. Newman's Villa.

The new villa residence, built for Mr H. J. Newman, is now complete, and is a handsome addition to the villa residences in the town. It fronts the Main South Road, and is delightfully situated on rising ground, having a pleasant outlook, taking in a good view of the mount, our chief scenic effect. The house contains seven rooms. Leading up to it the grounds have been tastefully laid out and planted with choica flowering shrubs aud shelter trees. The house is built in the shape of an L, having a bay window in the drawing-room, and a verandah along the front and also along the western side of the building. The main entrance door opeus into a spacious hall, 6ft Gin wide, which is cut off from the back part of the house by a colored glass door. The hall also has an archway in the centre, which relieves the length and gives a very nice effect to the whole. The draw-ing-room, 15ft by 14ft, is the first room on the left, and the diningroom, 17ft by 14ft, adjoins this. There is a double chimney between the .two, giving a fireplace to each, fitted with handsome register grates with tiled sides and fronts, and are surmounted by very handsomely designed mantel-pieces. On the other side of the hall is No. 1 bed-room, 15ft Gin by lift, with fireplace and register grate, and adjoining this room is a spare bed-room, 15ft Gin by 12ft. The walls of these four rooms are hung with very handsome and choice papers. The ceilings are pannelled and bordered with deep cornices. The ceilings and cornices are painted in tints to match the paperhaugings in each room, producing a very handsome and pleasing effect. The door-way out of the hall leads into a capacious scullery, 10ft by 10ft, and to the right is the kitchen, fitted with an Orion range and all other conveniences. Off the kitchen is a servant's bed-room. At the other end of this section of the house is a commodious bath-room and linen closet. The walls and ceilings of these apartments are match lined, and painted in a delicate shade of blue. Across the yard is a spacious wash-house and other conveniences. The water supply is provided by means of three galvanised iron 400-gallon tanks, from which the water is laid on to the kitchen, bath-room, and wash-house. The house and premises are complete in every particular, and make it as comfortable a residence as one could wish. The design is by Mr A. O'Brien, architect, under whose supervision the work has been carried out. Mr T. Munday was the contractor, and the manner in which the work, which is of first-class quality, has be3n carried out reflects the highest credit on him. Mr McDonald had the sub contract for painting and paperhangiug, and he has left nothing to be desired, displaying great taste and excellent workmanship. Mr A. Elgar did the plumbing and faithfully performed his portion.
