The Opunake Times. FRIDAY, JANUARY 3, 1896. MILK TESTS AT OAONUI.

There has been a certain amount of friction between milk suppliers at Oaouui and the Crown Dairy Co. The suppliers held a meeting and passed certain resolutions in the form of questions to Mr Marshall, the Crown Dairy Company’s inspector. We published the resolutions at the time and have now been favored by the Company with the replies sent, with a request to give publicity to them. This we have much pleasure in doing and herewith append question and answer : Question, —Proposed that Mr Marshall be asked if he would have any objections to us using the testing machine, as one and all are dissatisfied with the results. Answer. —We object to any incompetent person using the testing machine, but any suppliers are at liberty to be present at our testing. Question. —Proposed that Mr Marshall be asked if he would allow us to get an experienced man to test, he and some of the suppliers to be present. Answer.—We do not object to any competent man using our appliances, to test the suppliers’ milk, on the testing days, in Mr Marshall’s presence. Question. Proposed that the strength of the acid and the temperature of the water be tested. Answer.—Yes, we court the fullest investigation. Question. —Proposed that we have a daily Pst for a week as well as a weekly one. Answer.—Wo have repeatedly compared the daily tests with weekly tests, and in every case have found them exactly the same, but arrangements will be made, if desired, for Mr Marshall to take a daily test of each supplier’s milk for a week as a comparison with the composite test. Question. —Proposed that Mr Marshall be asked how the tests varied on the 10th November. Answer.—The reason for the tests varying on the 10th November was that the bottle of acid used first on that occasion was not of correct strength to take an effective test at all. Mr Marshall's acidometer was broken, and he could not ascertain if the acid was right until testing with it. When the first testing was complete he could see that those tests were not correct. After the first testing he used the second bottle of acid from the same case as the first, and found from the result that this was correct. Tests of all the milk were subsequently made with this acid. We await a further communication from you before moving further in the matter, —Yours truly, Hugh Bailv, secretary.”
