London, November 24. Mr Goschen considers the time in opportune for the Goographical Society to ask the Government to equip an Antarctic expedition. London, November 24. A convention has been signed between Great Britain and Egypt, agreeing to complete the abolition of the slave trade. Constantinople, November 24. The Sultan has rebuked the Governor of Anatobia for tolerating disorders in the province, and warned him that he will be held responsible for a recurrence of trouble. The Government is disposed to refuse additional gunboats for the Bosphorous. [? Refuse admission.] Sydney, November 24. The Government Statistician, reporting on the growth of sugar beet, says : —" Regarding the tests of roots grown for experimental purposes in different districts experts pronounce the yield unparalleled in the history of the cultivation of beet, aud there is a general developement of cropping where the soil is unsuited for sugar cane. Should the cultivation fulfil but half the expectations of the promoters there is little doubt that it will greatly modify the agriculture of the colony and add another profitable staple to its resources." Mr Coghlan also reports that there are very large areas suitable to the growth of beet. Melbourne, November 24. The new manager of the Angipena Treasure Goldmine has made damage ing charges against several persons originally interested as vendors of the property. He states that a man has made a confession implicating himself and the prospectors, which sets out that the alleged mine was " salted " as the shaft went down and a company was iloated by a Parliamentary syndicate of forty members, who received ten thousand fully paid up shares. The public took up 10,000 shares,, while the prospectors received another ten thousand fully paid up shares, and £7OO cash in addition. The directors have suspended operations in the mine, pending enquiries.
