Mrs Kennedy returned from a trip to the South Island, where she has been for the benefit of her health, and looks much improved for her outing. She saw Mr W. Middleton in Wellington, he having just arrived from his trip home.

Cabinet decided to appoint Mr Arthur Alexander Keith Duncan, at prenent chief clerk in the Public Trust Office, to be the Deputy-Public Trustee. The position carries with it a seat on the newly-constituted Board of the Advances to Settlers Office.

Mr Hodgson, manager of the Opunake Plumbing Works, notifies that they have opened business in Opunake in temporary premises adjoining Messrs White and Carter's. All kinds of plumbing and tinwork will be undertaken. Dairy utensils will be made a speciality of. Grand Moor Junr, who is travelling in this district this season, took first prize at the Egmont Show in the carriage or coaching stallion class. Belman, Judge Belden, Needlegun, and Young Bluelight also competed.

The Egmont Show this year was a great success. Fine weather greeted the Association for the occasion, and there was a very large attendance, it being estimated that there were about 5000 people on the ground. The energetic and courteous secretary, Mr C. A. Budge, had everything in apple-pie order, so that the whole arrangements passed off without any hitch.

At a special meeting of the shareholders, in the Egmont Freezing and Cool Storage Company, Limited, held at Waitara on Monday afternoon, it was decided to lease the works for a term of years to Mr C. E. Halloran. Freezing operations are to be commencee immediately. The first direct steamer to call at Waitara will probably arrive at the end of the present month.

Mr O. Cummins has a replace in this issue, directing attention to the final clearance of the salvage stock of drapery and clothing in the Forester's Hall to close Insurance account. Special prices are quoted in advertisment. which should Induce buyers of drapery to visit the Forester's Hall this month. Attention is also directed to the opening of summer goods.

The public are requested to note that the Postal and Telegraph Department will observe Monday, 11th November as a holiday instead of Saturday, 9th. On Saturday night a special delivery of letters will be mado over the counter at the Opunake Post Office for one hour after mail arrives. On Monday, 11th, the Opunake Post and Telegraph Office will bo closed all day. Mails will be made up and despatched on Monday morning as usual.

A largely attended meeting of sheepfarmers was held at Gisborne on Friday afternoon to consider the prices received locally for stock compared with prices obtained in other places. It was stated that sheepfarmers were getting only 12s for fat sheep, compared with 20s and upwards in the south ; 7s to 8s for store sheep, compared with to lGs quoted elsewhere. Skins locally were quoted at ss, as against 7s to 8s elsewhere- A committee was sent up to inquire into the matter and report to a future meeting.

Some of the suppliers being dissatisfied with the tost this season, at this factory are signing to purchase a Babcock tester, to be used as a check against the factory one, the cost to be paid by each supplier in equal shares.
