AWATUNA.
, (From a Correspondent.) A welcome change to fine sunny weather has improved the growth of the grass and made things in general look more cheerful and bright. Both the local factories started operations last week, but the supply of milk is small as yet, and will continue so for a month or more. Milking cows are in a very emaciated condition in this part, indeed they _seem to Lave quite enough to do to live at all, besides giving milk. A very successful dance was held at the Awatuna Hall on Wednesday evening, the occasion being a return given by the ladies to the bachelors’ ball, held some time ago. The whole arrangements were carried out by the ladies, they fulfilling the duties of doorkeepers, M.C.’s, and, in fact, disdaining male assistance altogether. Both as a social and financial success they fairly eclipsed the bachelors’ turn-out, the hall being crowded, and as a result of the ladies’ economical management and generosity in supplying refreshments free of cost, the hall funds will benefit to the extent of over £lo—a very satisfactory result indeed. Dancing commenced about 8 p.m., and continued till daylight. Mr Stephenson, of Manaia, supplied first-rate music (piano). Miss Brooker was most energetic and obliging as secretary, while Miss Guy fulfilled the duties of M.C., in a very self-possessed and capable manner. The other ladies, whom I presume constituted the committee and supplied the refreshments, were Mrs Parker, Misses Morton, Stirling, Brooke't, Morris (8), and Collins. One of the large rooms at the back was fitted out with chairs, tables, cards, and draughts for the non-dancers, and was very well patronised, showing that the thoughtfulness of the ladies for this hitherto neglected class was very much appreciated.
